Are you in need of a fresh start?

PalePinkFlower“You may have a fresh start any moment you choose,
for this thing we call ‘failure’ is not the falling down,
but the staying down.”

~ Mary Pickford

Have you given away your power to be well?

Empowerment. What does that mean to you? What does it mean if I ask you to apply it in regards to your health?

Empowerment is defined in the dictionary as the giving of an ability; enablement or permission.

In my dictionary — in my experience — though, health empowerment means you have faith that you possess the owner’s manual to your body. It means that you don’t hand over the power to be well completely to someone just because they are, for example, a medical professional. It means that you take responsibility for learning how your body runs best and paying attention to the small signs that crop up along the way to alert that you are straying off the path of wellness.

In short, it means you don’t empower – give away the ability — to be well to someone else, to circumstances or to fate.

So, do you want to become health empowered? (Please say yes!) Here are some steps:

•    What issue (disease, symptom, feeling) are you struggling with currently? If you sit and listen for your intuitive response, what do you think you might need to try to deal with it better?

•    Is there a small symptom niggling at the back of your brain, but you’re trying to ignore it because it hasn’t taken over your life? (yet) Don’t brush it under the rug. Bring it out, look at it, identify what it is. Again, take a quick gut check on what area of wellness you might need to give some attention to so that this symptom goes away and doesn’t grow. The areas of wellness, as I use them, are: simplicity, movement, stress relief, play, nutrition, mindset, spirituality, connection and natural care.

•    Back to any major issue you have. What do you know about it? What have you read about it? What’s the latest? What do alternative practitioners say about treating it? Plug your issue plus another term — i.e. alternative care or natural remedy — into Google, and make time to read here and there. Get up to speed on the latest along with different views.

•    Start paying attention to what seems to make you feel better or worse. Note the day, time of year, what was going on, what you ate, what you did. Is there information there you can use?

•    Empowerment can even be as simple as recognizing you have power. Not leaving how you feel up to the world or your age or your doctor. Leaving it up to you. Watch your mindset for awhile. What do you say and think about this? Catch it; change it for the positive. Look for where you do have power.

As always, take this in small steps. Please don’t overwhelm yourself. You’ll only give up. Learn a little; take a break. Learn a little more; take a break. Watch yourself like an observer for a while to learn more; take a break. Bit by bit, you’ll understand your unique body and signs. You’ll begin to possess, chapter by chapter, your personal owner’s manual to being well.
